Respiration rate for patients must be monitored during care or medical procedures. A thermistor can be used in two ways; direct temperature measurement or self heated as a flow sensor.
Direct temperature measurement senses the bursts of warm air expelled from the patient and counts the "bursts per minute". While the Thermistor can sense the temperature "spikes" this technique cannot determine the relative breathing strength. A self-heated thermistor flow sensor can measure both respiration rate and lung capacity.
