Healthy kidneys filter the blood of sediment, contaminants, Uric acids, etc. and then return vital nutrients to the blood. Patients with damaged kidneys from injury or disease can still function but dialysis is the only choice for patients with advanced kidney failure (less than 10% kidney function). In dialysis, the blood is removed from the body, artificially filtered by machine, treated, and returned. An NTC thermistor assures the blood is reheated to body temperature before it can be returned. Patients usually are treated in clinics and spend up to 12 hours per week on a dialysis machine.
